How To Spring Clean Your Life To Feel Powerful
Spring is just around the corner, and I always get an overwhelming urge to “spring clean.” This does not just mean physically cleaning my home, but all areas of my life. I aspire to clean up my nutrition and fitness, my relationships, hobbies, and productivity. After a winter slump, it feels only natural to have a renewed energy to set and achieve goals. Being a better version of ourselves is possible with a newly found joy in life. Here are ten great ways to enjoy a spring “reset” and spring-clean your life!
Spring Clean Your Life: Get Physical
Longer warmer days in a Canadian spring motivate me to get outside and enjoy nature. I have my running shoes and clothes ready to go for a walk as soon as I get home. A walk around the neighborhood gets in some steps while listening to an upbeat playlist. It feels good to have the sun hit your face, and the fresh air clear your mind. You may run into some neighbors or just exchange greetings with fellow walkers. It feels good to interact with others. Some days I might go to more of a nature trail near my house, or meet up with a friend. Walking is a great way to catch up and enjoy the weather before the evening routine sets in. Walking is a great way to stay in shape, physically, mentally, and even socially. See the post “Fitness to Fit Your Lifestyle” for ways to make this work best for you.
Clean Up Your Nutrition
What better time to zone in on your diet, as local produce becomes available again? Fresh fruits and vegetables are in season and are at their best. Grilling season also allows for simpler dinners, with an easy protein source, and fresh salad and veggie side. It can be easy to get stuck in a rut in the winter and eat all the junk food. With summer around the corner, we tend to live in shorts and bathing suits. It feels good to be at our best, by putting fresh, clean fuel into our bodies. Being more mindful of calories in and calories out allows me to maintain an ideal weight. I love using a Fitbit watch to track my food intake, as well as steps earned and calories burned. This gives me an overall picture of how I can improve my physical health.
Revamp Your Social Life
At times I get into an antisocial groove, as I have many social interactions throughout the day at work. I like to come home and get my routines going and hang out comfortably at home. We can fall into a trap of losing touch with our friends when this happens. No matter how much we don’t feel like getting ready, it always feels better once we’ve spent time with friends. Whether it’s dinner with a co-worker, or planning a girls’ weekend away, it is important to keep these connections going. Spring provides more opportunities to make plans and enrich our lives through the joy that these interactions bring. Similarly, it is a time to connect with family, gathering for BBQs to celebrate special days and milestones. It is important to make time for these special people who are so dear to us and make lasting memories.
Spring Clean Your Life by Organizing your Space
I find a newfound sense of productivity when the days get longer and brighter. It is fun to throw on some upbeat music and do some deep cleaning of areas of the house. My routine cleaning does not include “extras’ regularly. Things like windows, lights, doors, and appliances can all use a thorough cleaning. It is also a great time to purge any clutter from your spaces. I like to wipe down and organize items in the garage, as we will be spending more time outdoors. Spraying the grime off things like garbage cans, doors, and windows is so satisfying once all the snow is gone. It brings a sense of peace and accomplishment to have a minimalist lifestyle. Get rid of the clutter. Donate clothes you no longer wear, as well as items your kids no longer use. Getting rid of clutter brings a sense of peace and accomplishment.
Clean Up Your Yard and Make it Your Oasis
I love working outside on warm spring days. Getting the yard in order after the long winter is a satisfying task on the weekends. It is time to pick up debris and litter off your lawns and overseed them to get your grass growing. I use a lawn care company for regular fertilizer and weed spray treatments. This helps with the overall appearance of our yard. Yet we still need to spot-weed regularly and ensure we are watering and mowing effectively. It’s time to set up the outdoor furniture to create a nice space to relax in the warm spring breezes. Cleaning out gardens to plant flowers, as well as purchasing hanging baskets all add to the beauty of your space. It is satisfying to watch things grow and blossom each year. Growing vegetables can also be rewarding for those who have the space to try this!
Spring Clean Your Life by Deep Cleaning Your Vehicles
When winter comes to an end I am always itching to deep clean my car. If you can afford to splurge on detailing you will feel like you have a brand-new car. We spend so much time in our vehicles, especially in the warmer months as we travel around. It feels good to have them clean and comfortable! You can also use the local car wash to thoroughly vacuum the seats and carpets, then spray the mats. Armor All has a great line of car cleaning products for leather care, tires and mats, and windows https://www.armorall.ca/ca/. You can shampoo fabric seats, and detail your engine so your vehicle shines under the hood. It is deeply satisfying to wash away the grime of winter and renew your vehicle. You will feel amazing while driving it.
Schedule Time for Your Passions
One thing I love to do is read. I especially love to read outside on warm summer days, with a nice cold drink. Whether it’s at a beach or out on my deck, reading is a great way to enjoy time outdoors. I also enjoy writing and feel a newfound discipline to create content. Maybe you enjoy playing sports, getting out on the water, and spending time in nature. Plan to schedule at least one of these things on the weekends. My goal is to get my own kayak, as I enjoy paddling and exploring different lakes. Try different things out, and do what brings you joy and contentment.
Spring Clean Your Life: Get Out of Town
Nothing is more appealing on a warm spring day than a road trip. Get your partner, your kids, your family, or your friends, and get out and explore! Day trips make you feel refreshed as it is outside of your ordinary routine. It could be a day trip to a provincial park, to explore a new town or tourist attraction. If you can, make it a whole weekend away! We did this for our girls’ soccer tournaments and used it as a chance to explore the area as well. Traveling is the spice of life and can open up our minds to new adventures. It doesn’t even have to be far or expensive. You can enjoy new foods and activities. The joy of playing great tunes as you cruise the countryside on a beautiful sunny day is the best feeling.
Set Your Quarterly Goals
April to June is the spring quarter of the year. This is a good time to revisit and reflect on the goals you had set for the year. What is going well, and what do you need to keep working on? Get out a calendar and look at the next quarter. What will you plan on the weekends for fun? When will you schedule tasks you want to accomplish? The renewed motivation of springtime is ideal for adjusting your goals and making your plans before summer chaos sets in. Decide what you want, plan for it, and make it happen.
Spring Clean Your Life: Assess How You Spend Your Time Online
Take a good honest look at the things that are dominating your time right now. Maybe it’s too much time scrolling social media or watching Netflix. It could be that you want to be less sedentary now that you can get outside. Do you waste time on mindless tasks? Perhaps you’re not aware of how many hours these distractions are sucking out of your day. “Spring clean” in a metaphorical way by deleting anything that is bringing you down. Maybe there are Instagram accounts you follow but aren’t really gaining anything from. Delete toxic people from your social media who bring you down, and trigger negative emotions. Life is short, and your time should only be spent on uplifting content that brings you joy. Be mindful of what you are consuming, and clean up anything that does not make you feel happy.
Spend some time thinking about and planning your “spring cleaning”. Think about how you could implement change in some of these areas to bring more joy into your life. How can you be better organized, or more disciplined? Take advantage of the “clean slate” and “fresh start” mentality, which is never stronger than at this time of year. Use it to become your best possible self, whatever that looks like for you as an individual! Happy cleaning!
